I will be getting a urine and blood test for life insurance purposes. I quit smoking seven days ago and am wondering if the tests would still detect nicotine in my system.
The insurance company will likely not be testing for nicotine, which dissipates from the bloodstream within a couple days. What they will be testing for is cotinine, which can remain in your bloodstream for several months.
Many health food stores carry products designed to “scrub” your blood of cotinine and other impurities. However, the “one-shot” solutions are not recommended due to the fact that they drastically (if temporarily) raise your cholesterol levels.
Instead, find a solution designed to be ingested throughout a seven day period, at the very least. These pills tend to be pricey, but they work and will help keep your insurance premium low (or at least marginally affordable).
Be advised that this is just a stop-gap measure, however; after a few days the cotinine and nicotine will get back into your bloodstream as fat cells are burned. If you continue to not smoke, these impurities too will eventually vanish.
Although the affects of nicotine can be felt for two weeks or more – nicotine is normally a very short-acting drug and is usually eliminated through waste in a few days at most.

Nicotine stays in the body for 2-4 days, even with chewing tobacco.

I think three days… I quit in 2001…and the Doc said after three days the physical addiction is gone…it’s the habit that’s hardest to break…
Good luck w/your fraudulent insurance claim/application…nothing like integrity…right?!

Nicotine only stays in your bloodstream for a few days, but that is not what they are checking for in a life insurance test.
They test for cotinine. About 80 percent of nicotine is broken down to cotinine by enzymes in your liver. Cotinine can stay in your bloodstream for 6 to 8 MONTHS!!!!
If you want a clean test, I would recommend going to a health food store and finding products that will clean out your blood. Don’t take the liquid one shot ones, cause they will cause your cholesterol to go through the roof. You need to get the ones that are at least a week taking daily pills, even though they are expensive.
After the test, cotinine and nicotine will get back into your bloodstream from fat being burned that held the nicotine. So you won’t be clean for ever.
